World Needs a New Agreement on Drugs, say Czech PM Bohuslav Sobotka and former UK deputy PM Nick Clegg

In their Sunday commentary for British newspaper The Guardian the two politicians agreed that a new approach towards war on drugs is as vital as a climate change accord.

The Czech Republic is mentioned in the article as an example of sane drug policy based on decriminalization of small amounts of all drugs for personal use. It means that people caught for example in possession of up to 10 grams of dried cannabis are facing only a warning and/or fine, not criminal charges. The same applies for growing less than six cannabis plants at home.

According to Clegg and Sobotka the new approach should focus on harm reduction instead of repression: “Drugs may have destroyed many lives, but wrong drug policies are destroying significantly more.”
