G-Pen is one of the best players in the world of vaporizers and has many hits under its belt. Earlier this year, they launched the G-Pen Connect, which was a big hit with users who wanted an electronic heat source for a traditional dabbing kit.
But what if you don’t have a dabbing kit and are looking for a portable vaporizer for concentrates with separate water filtration? Meet the G-Pen Roam. Roam was launched on 1 April 2020.
Essentially, it is a fully functional dabbing kit packaged in a sleek and highly portable vaporizer. It is compatible with Wax, Crumble, Shatter and other solid concentrates.
Set and accessories
Roam comes in a nice travel case (made from hemp!).
The set includes:
- Vaporisation unit
- Quartz tank with lid and case
- Mouthpiece and glass tube
- Micro USB charging cable
- Filling tools and cleaning sticks
Design & features
Roam has an aluminium alloy body, is durable and has an ergonomic design that is well balanced and comfortable to hold. The bottom of the device is slightly thicker than the top, making it stable when you stand the vaporiser upright. It has a three-button interface with an LED screen and vibration feedback. The iconic G-Pen logo on the front of the device lights up when the device is turned on.
The body of the device can be slid out to access the glass tube, silicone mouthpiece and airflow. Both halves of the body are held tightly together by magnets.
Heating coil
The Roam heating element is located at the top of the device. The quartz coil is covered by a protective casing that keeps the heat source away from your fingers.
The casing can be slid out of the device for easier cleaning, maintenance or even refilling. Inside the body is a quartz tank with a heating element at the bottom.
Water filtration
One of the most unique features of the Roam is its separate glass tube for water filtration. Before the Roam, there were two types of wax vaporisers – dab pens and e-Nails. Pens are portable and e-Nails have water filtration. The Roam is a new type of vaporiser that combines portability with water filtration.
Some e-Nails have a water tube at the bottom, others have it at the top, but none of them have a separate water tube inside. All of them use rechargeable batteries, but none of them are portable enough to be used discreetly or away from home.
The water filtration tube is located inside the Roam body, so it is completely invisible when the device is in use. The attachment is waterproof and connects to a removable mouthpiece that protrudes from the device. Once the tube is filled with water, the device is ready for use.
Interface & use
Roam has three buttons – two buttons for temperature adjustment +/- and a power button. It also has an LCD display that shows the temperature level, battery status and other settings.
How to use it
- Fully charge the battery (full charge in 90 minutes)
- Fill the water tube to the marked line
- Turn on Roam by pressing the power button five times
- You can adjust the temperature by pressing the temperature +/- button (temperature range: 315 °C – 425 °C)
- Insert concentrates
- Roam has two heat activation modes – automatic and manual.
- Automatic heating mode – double-press the power button to activate automatic heating. Roam will heat up to the desired temperature and vibrate to signal ‘ready to vaporise’. It will remain hot for 30 seconds and then vibrate again to signal ‘heat deactivated’. You can also deactivate it at any time by pressing the power button twice.
- Manual heating mode – press and hold the power button to activate manual heating. Roam will heat up to the selected temperature and maintain it until you release the button.
- Max mode – when the device is active at its highest temperature of 425 °C, you can press the power button once to switch to Max mode, which delivers full power without temperature control. When this mode is active, the LED display shows ‘MAX’. If the device overheats, the LED displays a hand (which looks like a stopwatch) and turns off when it cools down to operating temperature. Max mode can be used to clean the device by ‘burning off’ residues or for extracts that require a higher temperature.
Additional features
- Switching between °C and °F – Hold the up button and the power button for three seconds to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
- Troubleshooting – If Roam detects a problem with one of the connections, an ‘X’ with a downward arrow will appear. Check the tank/coil connection and try again.
- Temperature range – 315 °C to 425 °C
Performance and vapour quality
You’ll fall in love with Roam after just a few minutes of use. My go-to choice for extracts used to be vaporiser pens, but that changed when I got Roam. The heating element is perfectly calibrated and the water filtration delivers tasty and rich vapour.
What could be better?
Roam uses a Micro USB charging port, which is outdated. I would like to see USB-C on such a technologically advanced device.
Compatibility with dry herbs – Roam is only compatible with solid extracts, and I wish G-Pen would add a chamber for dry herbs in the future.
I know that vaping dry herbs requires a lot more power, so this may just be wishful thinking, but I’m really tempted by the idea of using Roam with dry herbs.
G Pen Roam x Lemonnade & G Pen Roam x Cookies available from Canatura
For those who want top performance and a refined design, G Pen has teamed up with legendary Bay Area rapper and entrepreneur Berner to create two stylish dabbing pens: G Pen Roam x Lemonnade and G Pen Roam x Cookies.
Conclusion
Roam is nothing short of a revolution in vaporisation. I think it’s a great concept that other manufacturers will copy.
It’s clear that a lot of thought and creativity went into the design and construction of this vaporiser. Packing a separate water filtration system into a small, portable device is no easy task, but G-Pen has done it remarkably well.
