Background
The original Peak was released in early 2018 and is considered a game-changer in the industry.
Peak Pro was released in November 2020 and has the same general design and functionality, but with significant improvements such as an improved heating element, real-time temperature control and wireless charging. It is compatible with dabs, wax, honey, shatter or other solid extracts.
Package contents
Peak Pro comes in a nice travel case made of solid foam, and I would like to quickly describe a few things.
First, the case closes with magnets. Next, the bottom is cut so that it can remain open like a book, sturdy and balanced. Finally, it has magnets under the joint that can keep it open and flat, so it can be used as a small work surface when preparing material.
Sure, the case is not a big deal and does not affect anything ‘vape-related’, but it is clear at first glance that a lot of thought and clever design has gone into this product. Okay, enough about the case, let’s move on.
The set includes:
- Peak Pro
- filling tool
- cotton swabs
- Silicone holder for the carb cap
- USB-C charger
- Instructions for use
Optional accessories
Power Dock
The Peak Pro is compatible with Qi wireless charging, and along with the Pro, Puffco has also released a wireless charger that also has a built-in battery. This means it can keep the vaporiser charged even when it is disconnected from the mains. Using the app, you can also configure the Peak Pro to automatically turn on and heat up as soon as it is lifted from the charging dock.
Travel kit
The travel kit includes a silicone storage compartment for cleaning and dabbing tools, a slanted silicone mouthpiece for a better inhalation position, and a new hanging hook that keeps the carb cap in place.
Peak vs. Peak Pro
This is a quick summary of the improvements made to the Peak Pro from the previous model. They are similar in weight and height and are easy to use and maintain.
The improvements are:
- Puffco Peak Pro uses a USB-C charger instead of micro USB, which means that the Pro version has faster charging. It is also compatible with Qi wireless charging.
- The Pro’s heating coil is 40% larger than the previous version.
- The bubbler in the Puffco Peak Pro holds more water, which means better filtration and cooling of the vapour.
- The Pro is compatible with a smartphone app.
- The Puffco Peak uses a standard carb cap, while the Puffco Peak Pro uses an Oculus Carb Cap (it is transparent and allows you to see the material in the bowl).
- The LED lights on the Peak Pro are customisable.
- Several minor design improvements, such as a matte shell instead of the glossy one in the previous version.
Peak Pro design
The Peak Pro is made of three main components:
- a glass cone
- a base
- a coil
The entire device is 18 cm high and less than 8 cm wide.
Glass cone
The glass cone now holds a larger volume, which means it can hold more water and allows for smoother draws. It is made of highly durable borosilicate glass.
Base
The base has a wide bottom, making it remarkably stable. It now has a metal finish instead of the original glossy finish, which was a magnet for fingerprints.
The Puffco logo is on the back, along with a USB-C charging port, and the activation button is on the front under the coil.
There is also an LED ring at the bottom that indicates the status and current temperature setting.
Coil
The coil is made of ceramic and is 40% larger than the original model. It has a gold-plated connection and a connecting mechanism that feels much sturdier than the original.
The coil has a sensor that monitors the temperature of the bowl and reports it to the integrated microchip. This allows the Peak to make automatic power adjustments to maintain the exact temperature of the bowl at all times.
Most eRigs without a temperature sensor shoot up quickly and only deliver full power to the coil for the duration of the draw. This can heat the extracts above the desired temperature and makes precise temperature control impossible.
Peak Pro makes micro-adjustments on the fly and maintains the exact temperature in the bowl, no matter how big your dab is or how hard you draw.
Pro has a new carb cap with a clear top, so the bowl is visible even during vaporisation. Secure? It sits on top of the chamber and can be attached with the included silicone piece.
How to use
- Remove the glass attachment from the base and fill it with water just above the air vents.
- Align the air vent hole with the front of the chamber and press back into the base.
- Hold the power button for 3 seconds.
- Click the button once to cycle through the temperature settings – blue indicates the lowest, which is 250 °C, followed by green, red and white, which is the highest at 285 °C.
- Using the filling tool, place the dab on the bottom of the coil, not on the sides. I suggest starting with a small amount, about the size of a grain of rice.
- Place the carb cap on top of the chamber.
- Double-click to start heating.
- When the Peak is ready, it will vibrate and flash three times.
- Inhale slowly and gently.
Boost mode: The Peak has a Boost mode that can be activated by double-clicking, which extends the session duration and increases the temperature.
Stealth Mode: Quadruple-click the button to enter stealth mode, which turns off all lights and indicators.
Smartphone app
Peak Pro has a smartphone app that can be easily connected to the device. That is, if you use an Android phone.
If you have an iPhone, like me, the process involves a few steps where you need to download a Bluetooth browser and then connect to Peak Pro.
Apple does not allow vaporisation apps in the App Store, so getting the app on iOS is a little more complicated. It was a fairly straightforward process and the app worked correctly on the first try.
With this app, you can view device information such as battery level, bowl temperature, and there’s even a counter that shows how many dabs you’ve taken today or in total.
You can also customise heating profiles, change their names, set the temperature between 230 °C and 325 °C, set the duration between 15 seconds and 2 minutes, and change the colour of the LEDs.
The app also allows you to activate boost mode, standby mode, reduce the brightness of the LEDs, and turn them off completely in stealth mode. It also has a party mode with rainbow colours.
I definitely recommend everyone to install the app. It unlocks a lot of great features and options.
Performance and vapour quality
When it comes to performance, the Peak Pro is a beast. Real-time temperature control is a truly revolutionary feature. The old Peak produced excellent, tasty vapour, but the Peak Pro takes it to the next level. The vapour is strong and the taste is super clean.
I was able to distinguish different flavours and nuances in each of the extracts I tested with the device.
For most users, I recommend sticking to the bottom two temperature settings. It was the perfect balance between flavour and vapour production. At higher settings, you’ll get a stronger hit, but be prepared to sacrifice flavour and vapour quality.
Bottom line
If you’re still using an old-school rig and butane torch, throw them away. The Puffco Peak Pro is the latest and greatest reason to do so. The Peak Pro is one of the more expensive eRigs, but it’s also one of the best.
My favourite feature by far was the real-time temperature control. It maintains the exact temperature in the bowl, which is a game-changer in terms of efficiency and vapour quality. Extracts never ‘burn’ or overheat. So nothing goes to waste and you always get the optimal consistency.
The Peak Pro can be used as a point-and-shoot device for complete beginners, but it’s also powerful and smart enough to satisfy experienced users.
The smartphone app is extensive and allows you to fully customise everything about the vaporiser. The Peak Pro is the best for portable dabbing.
